Planning a funeral can be overwhelming, but you are not alone in this. We’re here to support you throughout this journey and make this process one of love, healing, and life celebration. Below is some information to help you get started, but you can contact us at any time if you need help.

What to Expect When We Meet

When you meet with a member of our staff to discuss your arrangements, we’ll first provide you with a general price list to give you a basic idea of what our services cost.

We’ll then ask you about your loved one to gain an understanding of the person the services will honor. Use this time to communicate your ideas and preferences, share your loved one’s life story, revisit memories, and highlight their accomplishments. Our professionals will use this information to guide you in the creation of a personalized, meaningful celebration of your loved one’s life.

This process may include:

  • Preparing and filing the official death certificate
  • Scheduling the services and events (including the location, date, and time)
  • Selecting a casket, urn, or other products you may need
  • Drafting an obituary
  • Arranging necessary transportation
  • Selecting pallbearers

When a Death Occurs

Whether a death is sudden or expected, the loss of a loved one is indescribable. When you are in a heightened emotional state, even the most basic decisions can seem staggering. This section seeks to guide you through the immediate hours following a passing. This guide also contains a form to help you gather some of the vital information that we will need to help plan for your loved one’s funeral.

If the person was not under hospice care, the police will have to be notified immediately. The police will be dispatched to the home and will place the call to the coroner or medical examiner. From there, the coroner or medical examiner will transport the deceased and determine whether further action is necessary. The coroner or medical examiner must release the deceased before a funeral home can do anything. If the person was under hospice care, contact the hospice representative, and they will notify family members what the proper procedures are to follow.

The staff of a care facility, such as a hospital or nursing home, will notify you immediately after a death has occurred. If a funeral home has been provided to the hospital or nursing home, they may notify you at the time of passing. It may be necessary to follow up with the funeral home directly. If you are present at the hospital when the funeral director arrives, they will ask a few questions about the deceased’s wishes and set up a time to make arrangements. If you are not present, a funeral director will contact you by telephone to discuss these arrangements.

Once everything has been cleared with the proper authorities, the next call you place should be to a licensed funeral director. Funeral directors are here to help you obtain a death certificate, transport the body, and, in the event a plan ahead was not done, select a casket or urn and arrange the funeral or memorial service. The funeral director will also help you notify the insurance company of the deceased. Funeral directors are there to help you and advise you.

You should meet with a funeral director within 24 hours of a death to begin making final arrangements for your loved one. Deciding on these final arrangements may seem like a very daunting task, especially when you are in heightened emotional state. Do not worry: funeral home staff have years of experience, and will strive to ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible.

Funeral Planning

Planning a funeral is one of the most thoughtful things you can do for your family. However, grief is a confusing and difficult time, and planning a funeral in the midst of these emotions can be overwhelming. By looking over our  Funeral Guide it may help lift some of the burden off your friends and family.

The first step is to gather some information. We will be using the following information to complete and file a death certificate. One thing to think about is how many certified copies of the death certificates you will need.

Burial

There are many things to consider when deciding if burial is right for either you or your family, whether it is at the time of death or if you are pre-planning a funeral. One of the first decisions you’ll need to make involves choosing both the cemetery and the specific grave location within its grounds.

Monumental Cemetery

A monumental cemetery is the traditional style of cemetery where headstones or other monuments made of marble or granite rise vertically above the ground. There are countless different types of designs for headstones, ranging from very simple, to large and complex.

Lawn Cemetery

A lawn cemetery is where each grave is marked with a small commemorative plaque that is placed horizontally at the head of the grave at ground-level. Families can still be involved in the design and in choosing the information contained on the plaque, but in most cases the plaques are a standard design.

Mausoleum

A mausoleum is an external, free-standing building constructed as a monument enclosing the interment space or burial chamber of a deceased person or people. A mausoleum may be considered a type of tomb, or the tomb may be considered to be within the mausoleum. The most famous mausoleum is the Taj Mahal in India.

Columbarium

Columbarium walls are generally reserved for cremated remains. While cremated remains can be kept at home by families, or scattered somewhere significant to the deceased, a columbarium provides friends and family a place to come to visit. Columbarium walls do not take up a lot of space and a cheaper alternative to a burial plot.

Natural Cemetery

Natural cemeteries, also known as eco-cemeteries or green cemeteries, are a new style of cemetery set aside for natural burials. Natural burials are motivated by the desire to be environmentally conscious. While natural burials can be performed at any type of cemetery, they are usually done in a natural woodland area. Conventional markings, such as headstones, are generally replaced with a tree, bush, or the placement of a natural stone.

Burial FAQ's for you to consider

Traditionally, the funeral will be a Complete Funeral Service. This includes a family or public viewing of the deceased. Following this will be a service, typically in the church or at the funeral home. This would be followed by the earth or above ground burial of the casketed remains. Caskets selected may cost from several hundred dollars to several thousands of dollars depending on the material the casket is constructed of. Many cemeteries require that a minimum grave liner be used to encase the casket when earth buried. These minimum liners are constructed of concrete and are designed to hold the weight of the earth, maintaining the cemetery property. A sealed vault may also be used. The vaults are also constructed of concrete and are designed to not only protect the gravesite, but are manufactured with inner liners that not only restrict the entrance of graveside elements (water and earth) but increase the strength of the vault.

The Graveside Service can be another selection. This many times would follow a time of visitation at the funeral home. The casketed remains would then be transferred to the cemetery where a graveside ceremony could take place followed by the burial.

At Cartmell-Davis Funeral Home, we encourage families to create very personalized services. It is important to acknowledge that life that has been lived and to offer to the community a way in which to celebrate that life. By offering services and materialization features that are personal and special, a unique life can be remembered and honored in an individualized way that is comforting to the family and friends.

Opening and closing fees can include up to and beyond 50 separate services provided by the cemetery. Typically, the opening and closing fees include administration and permanent record keeping (determining ownership, obtaining permission, and the completion of other documentation which may be required, entering the interment particulars in the interment register, maintaining all legal files), opening and closing the grave (locating the grave and laying out the boundaries, excavating and filling the interment space), installation and removal of the lowering device, placement and removal of artificial grass dressing and coco-matting at the grave site, leveling, tamping, re-grading and sodding the grave site, and leveling and re-sodding the grave if the earth settles.

The actual opening and closing of the grave is just one component of the opening and closing fee. Due to safety issues which arise around the use of machinery on cemetery property, and the protection of other gravesites, the actual opening and closing of the grave is conducted by cemetery grounds personnel only.

To remember, and to be remembered. A permanent memorial in a cemetery provides a focal point for remembrance and memorializing the deceased. Memorialization of the dead is a key component in almost every culture. Psychologists say that remembrance practices serve an important emotional function for survivors by helping them bring closure, which allows the healing process to begin. The provision of a permanent resting place is an important part of this process.

When a cemetery runs out of land, it will continue to operate and serve the community. Most cemeteries have crematoriums, and some historic cemeteries even offer guided tours.

We think of cemetery lands as being in perpetuity. There are cemeteries throughout the world that have been in existence for hundreds of years.

There is no law that states a specific time-span for burial. Considerations that will affect the timeline include: the need to secure all permits and authorizations; notification of family and friends; preparation of cemetery site, and religious considerations. Public health laws may limit the maximum amount of time allowed to pass prior to final disposition. Contact your local funeral provider for more details.

No. Embalming is generally a choice, one which depends on factors like if there is to be an open casket viewing of the body, or if there will be an extended time between death and internment. Public health laws may require embalming if the body is going to be transported by air or rail.



Besides ground burial, some cemeteries offer interment in lawn crypts or entombment in mausoleums. In addition, most cemeteries provide options for those who have selected cremation. These often include placement of cremated remains in a niche of a columbarium or interment in an urn space. 



These are the outside containers into which the casket is placed. Burial vaults are designed to protect the casket and may be made of a variety of materials, including concrete, stainless steel, galvanized steel, copper, bronze, plastic, or fiberglass. A grave liner is a lightweight version of a vault which keeps the grave surface from sinking in.

Most large, active cemeteries have regulations that require the use of a basic grave liner for maintenance and safety purposes. Either a grave liner or a burial vault will satisfy these requirements. Some smaller rural or churchyard cemeteries do not require use of a container to surround the casket in the grave. There are alternatives to burial. See Cremation Services below.



Cremation

Many people believe that if you choose cremation, you cannot have a gathering, visitation or a ceremony – however just the opposite is true. Cremation does not limit choices, but, in fact, provides you with more options to personalize a service. It is a process which is performed in a respectful and dignified manner and can be memorialized in many ways. Cremation is not an alternative to a funeral, but rather an alternative to burials or other forms of disposition.

A cremation service can be arranged with a family gathering or with a funeral service. A traditional visitation followed by a religious or personalized celebrant led service and cremation may be just the ritual needed by one family. For other families, an unaccompanied (direct) cremation followed by a contemporary memorial service may be more spiritually fulfilling for another. Cremation services can be simple or elaborate, traditional or non-traditional to meet the needs and preferences of your family. Ritual and ceremony should be as individual and unique as you or your loved one. Cremated remains can be scattered, buried, or they may be kept with the family in a decorative urn. 

There are many ways to dispose of ashes today: cremated remains can be placed in an artificial coral reef in the ocean; they can be launched into space or sent up in helium balloons; they can be spun into glass pieces of art or diamonds.

Just as with every step of the cremation process, you have several options to consider about a final resting place. Cremation FAQ's for you to consider

Cremation is the process of reducing the human body using high heat and flame. Cremation is not the final disposition of the remains, nor is it a type of funeral service.

This can be accommodated by the use of a cremation casket (casket that is designed to be cremated) or the use of a rental casket. Following the viewing, service or ceremony, and eventual cremation, the cremated remains can be buried, properly scattered, or returned to the family for safe keeping. Urns are used to hold the cremated remains. Urns can be constructed out of basic materials like cardboard or plastic, or constructed out of more protective materials like basic and semi-precious metals, ceramics, and woods.

The Immediate Cremation Service can be arranged as an immediate disposition of the body, but is most times followed by a memorial service at the church, funeral home or other location. A Memorial Service is one where the body is not present. We recommend that if you select an immediate cremation that you are allowed a time, if possible, to privately view the body as a family. If the viewing can be done in a matter of a few hours after the death then embalming will not be necessary. If there is to be a long delay (more than 8-12 hours) then embalming would be encouraged. If the viewing could not be done within 48 hours then embalming may be required. Viewing of the deceased is a very important step in acknowledging that the death has occurred. Having some type of service or ceremony is also a key ingredient to a healthy recovery of a loss due to a death.

A Direct Cremation refers to a cremation being provided, while limiting funeral services to the removal and transportation of the deceased into our care.

No, a casket is not required. Most states require an alternative container constructed of wood or cardboard; however, in some states, no container is required.

No. It is against the law for a funeral home to tell you otherwise.

Yes, most funeral homes allow immediate family members to view the deceased prior to cremation.

Yes they can; some cremation providers will allow family members to be present when the body is placed in the cremation chamber. Some religious groups ask for this as part of their funeral custom.

Nearly all Protestant Churches allow for the urn to be present during the memorial service. Most Catholic Churches also allow the remains to be present during the Memorial Mass. Including cremated remains as a part of the funeral provides a focal point for the service.

While laws vary state by state, for the most part, remains can be buried in a cemetery lot or in a cremation garden, interred in a columbarium, kept at home, or scattered.



All reputable cremation providers have developed rigorous sets of operating policies and procedures in order to maximize the level of service and minimize the potential for human error. Since it is illegal to perform more than one cremation at a time, and the vast majority of crematories can only cremate one body at a time, it is next to impossible to receive the incorrect remains.

It all depends on the weight of the individual. For an average sized adult, cremation can take two to three hours at a normal operating temperature of between 1,000 and 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cremated remains resemble coarse sand and are whitish to light grey in color. The remains of an average sized adult usually weigh between 7 and 8 pounds.

An urn is not required by law. An urn may be desired if there is to be a memorial service or if the remains are to be interred in a cemetery. If an urn is not purchased or provided by the family, the cremated remains will be returned in a temporary plastic container.

Green Burial

Green burial, or natural burial, ensure the burial site remains as natural as possible in all respects. Interment of the bodies is done in a bio-degradable casket, shroud, or a favorite blanket. No embalming fluid, no concrete vaults.

Green Burial FAQ's for you to consider

It is clear that nature has intended that our bodies be reunited with the earth. All organisms that have lived, have died and returned to the soil…only to be recycled into new life. Constant microbial activity in the soil breaks everything down. Nature creates no waste. Everything is recycled.

In keeping with your personal values, a natural burial site for you, family, even pets, promotes growth of native trees, shrubs and wildflowers, in turn bringing birds and other wildlife to the area. Water is not wasted, nor are pesticides and herbicides used in attempts to control nature. Instead, a green cemetery allows nature take it’s course. Planting native trees, shrubs and flowers in your loved one’s honor promotes habitat restoration. To encourage land preservation, a green cemetery grants a conservation easement for the burial site.

A green burial is a cremation alternative, and a viable alternative to “traditional” burial practices in the United States. It is an earth friendly option when considering burial vs cremation. Many families choose cremation because it’s seen as more environmentally friendly than traditional burial. Embalming, expensive sealed caskets and burial vaults are not required by law. Though traditional memorial parks may require them, a green cemetery or memorial nature preserve does not. The simplicity of a green burial is in tune with nature and need not be expensive.

Until recently, interment in an environmentally friendly burial ground was not an option. Now we can consider and encourage a natural burial, helping to preserve open spaces throughout the United States. This will increasingly become a cremation alternative.

Choosing a green burial now relieves your loved ones of the distress that comes in having to make difficult, and often costly, decisions after your passing. Involve your friends and family now, so difficult decisions do not need to be made in a time of grief.

Kathy Cartmell-Sirrico

Funeral Director

Kathy has been a lifelong resident of Plymouth and grew up in the funeral business. After graduating from Plymouth Carver High in 1974, she earned her Funeral Director’s license at the New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences. After her father’s retirement in 1985, Kathy took over his business. She was selected by the Governor of Massachusetts to serve on the State Division of Professional Licensure under the board of Funeral Directing and Embalming for several years which included a position as Chairman. Kathy also served on CURA Visiting Nurses, Cranberry Hospice, and Plymouth Public Library as a board member. Kathy also served on committees for St. Mary Parish in Plymouth. She was the first woman President for the Plymouth Kiwanis. In addition, she also was deployed to St. Charles Parish and New Orleans as a Mortuary Officer for DMORT (Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team) following the events of Hurricane Katrina. Kathy is the proud mother of twins and grandmother of two. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, spending time with friends, family and her dog Morticia.

Paul Santos

Funeral Director

Paul has been a Plymouth native his entire life. He graduated from Plymouth-Carver Regional High School Class of 1971. He attended Massasoit Community College and received a degree in Business Administration. Paul had an interest in the Funeral Industry and decided to attend the New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences. He received his funeral directing license in 1975. Paul apprenticed with a local funeral home from 1974-1976. His career took another turn where he became a Sergeant for the Massachusetts Department of Correction. Paul has been retired for the past few years and has rejoined the funeral industry here at Cartmell-Davis. He is a Communicant of St Joseph Church in Kingston as well as a Eucharist Minster. Paul served on the Plymouth Board of Health for eight years where he also served as Chairman for two of those years. Paul is active in the community and is a member of the American Legion Post 40 SAL Squadron, Past Vice President for the Unity Club and is also a member of the Seaside Club, the Hill Top Club, the Columbo Club, the Young America Club. Paul is also a 3rd Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Council #4480 in Kingston, MA.

Seth Silveira

Funeral Director

Seth has been working with Cartmell-Davis since 2018 and is a recent graduate of Cape Cod Community College, earning his degree in Mortuary Science. A strong sense of service to the elderly and disabled person, he has advocated for their independent living and safe homes prior to joining the funeral home. Seth is a graduate of UMass Dartmouth, Charlton School of Business. In his spare time, Seth enjoys golf, playing the guitar and volunteering as a youth baseball umpire.

Heidie L. Grant

Funeral Director, Licensed Insurance Agent, Certified Funeral Celebrant

Heidie (Lawrence) Grant has worked in the funeral service business for over twenty-five years. She enjoys working with a dedicated, caring and generous staff of people who believe that assisting families during their difficult time is top priority. She believes in meeting and exceeding all expectations throughout the entire funeral planning process and doing whatever possible to make it easier for the family.

Mary Aveni

Funeral Director, Certified Funeral Celebrant

Mary is happy to be back home in Plymouth after living and working on the North Shore of Boston in a well-known funeral home for the past 30 years. Mary attended Plymouth-Carver High School Class of 1980. Following graduation, she attended the New England Institute for Applied Arts and Sciences where she earned her degree in Funeral Service. She joined the Cartmell-Davis team in 2017 and has reacquainted with the community, family and friends. Mary knew her pathway at a young age. Her desire to help people with compassion, comfort and respect has guided her love for funeral service. Mary was asked by NFDA (National Funeral Directors Association) to offer her assistance immediately following the events of September 11th, 2001. Mary worked diligently with DNA Specialists and Families helping them through a horrific time in our nation’s history. Mary is one of four siblings and has 2 nephews. Mary is a proud member of the Plymouth Arts Center. On time off, Mary relaxes by the sand or surf but is always up for listening to music, taking in an art show or seeing a play and spending time with friends and family.

Daniel R. Holland

Care Center Manager, Funeral Director

Dan is a proud graduate of Plymouth North High School Class of 2000. His desire to work with families and the community lead him to attend the Funeral Institute of the Northeast upon his graduation. As a former Mortuary Officer with DMORT (Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team), he has helped families find closure in the worst times such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the Continental Flight 3407 disaster in Buffalo, NY. Dan has been recognized as the top “40 under 40” by the Cape & Plymouth Business Magazine (2017). Always willing to learn, Dan is busy attending classes and seminars to better serve the funeral profession and families. Actively involved in the Lions Club (Past President), you can find him out with his dog Harper, or working on his home with his husband Chris.

Kenneth Dooley

Chief Financial Officer

Kenneth began his career in International Banking in New York City. After 25 years, he decided to start a new career as a business owner in Key West. After 20 years in the event business Kenneth and his husband Peter decided to sell their business. As a recent transplant to Plymouth, Kenneth has joined us in his new position as CFO. Kenneth brings to the table 40 years of accounting and business expertise to our family business focusing on the day to day financial operations.

Jeffrey D. LaForest

Funeral Assistant, After Care Coordinator, Vice President / Owner

Jeff has been part of the Cartmell-Davis family his entire life as cousin to Kathy Cartmell Sirrico. Experienced as a funeral apprentice, he lends a hand, offers an ear to listen and guides survivors to celebrating a life in his work as After Care Coordinator. Jeff believes that “each family grieves differently; no family grieves the same”. Jeff is a former Flight Attendant/Recruiter who retired after a 30 year career with American Airlines. Pairing his knowledge of both the funeral and airline industry, he compassionately cared for the crew members families that lost a loved one following the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. In addition, Jeff is a former Mortuary Officer of DMORT (Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team) and was deployed to New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina where he assisted in recovery efforts. He is a cantor/soloist for St. Bonaventure Parish in Plymouth. Jeff is a proud Uncle to several nieces and nephews, loves spending time with family, friends and his husband John and their two dogs Shelby and M’Lynn.

John J. Vincent, Jr.

Funeral Director and Insurance Agent, President / Owner

A lifelong Plymouth native, John is actively involved in the community with leadership roles with the Lions Club, St. Joseph’s Council #4480, Knights of Columbus, Old Colony Club, Young America Club and the Portuguese Continental Union Lodge #1 Plymouth. Equally, he is dedicated to serving his funeral profession as a member of the Board of Directors for the MA Funeral Directors Association and as a Mortuary Officer with DMORT (Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team) for FEMA. If asked, John would say the most rewarding part of his work is serving families during the most difficult times by listening and helping them through the healing process. He loves being part of a team that shares his compassionate manner and celebratory service. During time off, John loves living in the Pinehills Community with his husband, Jeff, and their two dogs, Shelby and M’Lynn, traveling, the sunshine and spending time with friends.
