Obituaries
Warren (Smitty) Smith, 79, died Monday January 28, 2013 surrounded by his loving family after a short period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of the late Carol Ann Smith. Born and raised in Taunton, Massachusetts he was the son of the late Bernard and Alice (Gibson) Smith. He was a graduate of Taunton High School.
Warren was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force where he spent many years as an air traffic controller. The Air Force took him all over the world from North Africa to Japan to England and all over the US. His love of aviation secured him his post-military career as the Plymouth Airport Manager where he helped to expand and develop the airport to what it is today. He continued active involvement in the Massachusetts Airport Manager Association as well as the local aero club. He loved his role providing air shows to the local community and this year was happy to be the "air boss."
Smitty was a resident of Plymouth for over 30 years where he was a Deacon of the Second Congregational Church of Plymouth and participated in many other church leadership roles. He also served in leadership roles with many civic organizations including the area Boy Scouts as well as the Plymouth and Manomet Kiwanis Clubs. Warren and his wife, Carol, were the inspiration behind many young Eagle Scouts. He left an imprint on his community and was an incredible community builder.
Helping to support his family at a young age he was a pin-setter at Roseland. Bowling became a sport he excelled at and was recognized as a young prospect. He was an avid reader and lover of all things New England sports.
Warren was pre-deceased by his son Scott Lindsey Smith, brothers David, Damon, Bernard, Robert and twin brother, Walter Smith and sister, Sarah.
He will be deeply missed by his loving children Lynne (Bill) Scheible of Big Rapids, Michigan, Lorrie Smith (Partner Mike McConaghy) of Hanson, Massachusetts, Mark (Laura) Smith of Coral Gables, Florida and Warren (Rachael) Smith of Patterson, Louisiana. Also his grandchildren, Nick (Melissa) Scheible, Lindsey Scheible,( & partner Gary Chesebro), Brady & Connor Smith, Tyler & Emmeli Smith and Scotty (Ashton) Smith. He recently celebrated the birth of his great-grandchildren Rowan Scheible and Lucy Claire Smith. And his only living sibling, Louise Smith along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Cartmell Funeral Home on Friday from 5-8 pm. A celebration of his life will be held at the Second Congregational Church of Plymouth 518 State Rd. Manomet, Massachusetts on Saturday at 10:00 am. Donations may be made to the Second Congregational Church of Plymouth. More info and online guestbook visit www.cartmellfuneralhome.com
