Obituaries
Stephen Ernest Urquhart, 74, was born in Quincy, MA on March 2, 1949. He died, unexpectedly, in Plymouth on June 9, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Katherine Driscoll Urquhart; his son Stephen M. (spouse Michaela), in Orlando, FL; his mother, Eileen Urquhart, in South Dennis, MA; his sister Janice Urquhart, in Brewster, MA; and his brothers Dale (spouse Veronica), in Kanata, Ontario, Canada; Bryan, in suburban Atlanta, GA; and Gregory, in South Dennis, MA, as well as a large, extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Raymond M. Urquhart, and his brother, David (spouse Claudine), in Greenville, SC. Steve loved his family and had fond memories of summers spent with his brother, Dale, and grandmother, Laura Piper Urquhart, in Upper Blackville, New Brunswick, Canada, where he remembered spotting salmon for Ted Williams from a suspension bridge over the Miramichi River.
Steve was a 1967 graduate of Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School where he had been on the football team. A "double eagle", Steve was a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Boston College, 1976 and Cum Laude B.C. Law, 1979. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa (B.C.) and Phi Delta Phi Moynihan House (B.C. Law) honor societies. He passed the Massachusetts Bar in 1979 and was admitted to the U.S. District Court, MA in 1980. He was a trial attorney on the North Shore until moving to Plymouth 10 years ago where he worked tirelessly on environmental, immigration and voting rights issues. He was a member of the American Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar Association, Massachusetts Academy Trial Attorneys, American Arbitration Association, International Platform Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
Despite being encouraged to run for public office, Steve preferred working behind the scenes; as a Legislative Aide at the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Precinct Captain, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, 1979-1980, and for various Democratic candidates including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and, most recently, Joe Biden.
The family moved often in conjunction with his father's work as a City Administrator. Childhood homes included Manchester, CT, Cedar Grove, NJ, Boulder, CO, Islesboro, ME and Westchester County, NY, before settling in South Dennis when his father's work with the U.S. State Department took him overseas to Vietnam.
Steve loved to travel and fell in love with the Philippines. A season football ticket holder for over 40 years, he and his son travelled across the country following the B.C. football team during the "Flutie era." Steve was proud of his Scottish heritage and lived his life in accordance with the Urquhart Clan motto, "Meane well, Speake well, Doe well." Family genealogy also shows he was a descendant of Brewster, Howland and Allerton, Pilgrims who arrived in Plymouth on the Mayflower. His hobbies included music, reading and model ship building. Steve enjoyed singing and had sung at several clubs in the Boston area.
Arrangements are through Cartmell-Davis Funeral and Cremation, Plymouth, MA. A memorial service will be held at the Northside United Methodist Church, 701 Airline Rd Brewster MA 02361, on Saturday, July 22nd, at 2:00 pm. The family has requested that memorial donations be made to doctorswithoutborders.org/Ukraine
