Richard Patrick Ahern
May 2, 1929 - January 30, 2001
Richard Patrick Ahern, age 71, died on January 30, 2001 at the Jordan Hospital in Plymouth following a long brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Alice Marie (McDevitt) Ahern of Plymouth. Born in Boston, MA, on May 2, 1929, he was the son of the late John D. and Mary Agnes (Dacey) Ahern. He was educated in the Boston School System and was a high school graduate. Following his high school graduation, Mr. Ahern enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his country during World War 2 as a Seaman, 2C. Mr. Ahern was employed by the Boston Herald American for 25 years and then went to work for the Boston Globe, from where he retired in 1991 after 25 additional years as a pressman. He moved to Plymouth from Braintree, MA, in 1984, making Plymouth his permanent residence. Mr. Ahern was a member of the American Legion Post #40 in Plymouth, and especially enjoyed spending his free time attending his grandchildrens sporting events. Besides his wife, Alice Marie, Mr. Ahern is survived by 2 sons, Richard P. Jr., of Bridgewater, James F. Ahern of Plymouth, 2 daughters, Roberta C. Shaw of Plymouth and Jeanne M. Loukas of Cliffside Park, NJ. He also leaves 2 brothers, John P.Jr. of Marco Island, FL, and Thomas of Hingham. His brother Francis Ahern of Dedham pre-deceased him. He was cherished grand-father of 6. The funeral will take place on Friday morning at 8:15 a.m. from the Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St. , Plymouth followed by a funeral mass at the Church of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha , 126 South Meadow Rd., Plymouth at 9:00 a.m. Interment will be in the St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Roxbury,(Boston).
