Porter A. Holmes, age 93, a lifelong resident of Plymouth, passed away on Friday, September 30 th , in Plymouth. He was married to the love of his life, Margaret M. (McKee) Holmes for 72 years. Father of Mitchell Holmes and his wife Mary of Plymouth, Kevin Holmes of Plymouth, and the late Portia Holmes Hall. Grandfather of Heather Thevenin and her husband Greg, Rebecca Mifsud and her husband Alan, Joshua Holmes, Nathaniel Holmes, Ashley Holmes, Mark Holmes, Caitlin Holmes, and Matthew Hall. Great grandfather of Zachary Thevenin, Erica Thevenin, Jonathan Mifsud, Timothy Mifsud, Sarah Mifsud, Alex Mifsud, as well as 8 other great grandchildren.
Born in Plymouth on May 17, 1929, son of the late Norman W. and Jeanette (Morton) Holmes. Porter attended Plymouth High School and graduated from Weymouth High School, having attended the carpentry program. Porter used these skills to build his family home, where he and Margaret raised their family. He went on to serve his country in the Massachusetts Army National Guard. After working at the Plymouth Cordage Company, Porter was a carpenter before joining the Plymouth Fire Prevention, and proudly ended his career with the Plymouth Fire Department as the Captain of Station 1. He always appreciated the relationships he had with his fellow firefighters, and enjoyed reminiscing about old times whenever he saw them.
Porter and Margaret loved to travel, and especially camping. From their honeymoon in Niagara Falls, these two were known to pack a tent and set off to their destination, sometimes ones that were unknown. The family would receive word through postcards of their travels, usually by way of the National Parks across the country. A place they always would return to was the White Mountains in New Hampshire, sharing the experience with multiple generations, including their great-grandchildren right up into recent years.
Porter loved life. He was a perpetual jokester and always looked for a good laugh. If there was music playing, Porter never missed an opportunity to get up and dance. Porter always had a garden, including this summer. In the past, his yard was full with goats, chickens, rabbits, ducks, and beehives. Porter also loved his family. He was so proud and involved in everything his grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved in, from scouts to school concerts. Porter never missed an event if he knew about it. For those who knew Porter well, they knew him affectionately as Grandpa.
