Maurice Davis Murphy of Kingston, MA died January 29th, 2017 after a long struggle with COPD, endured with tremendous patience and grace. Born on May 10th, 1937 in Dedham, MA, he was the son of the late Margaret Holmes Davis and Maurice Godsland Murphy. He was devoted to his family and is survived by his beloved wife of forty-five years, Kathleen (Lannan). He was a proud and loving father to Margaret (Jonathan Sanford), Dr. Sarah (Dr. Wael Asaad), Maurice Jr. (Heather Wolf), Colin (Dr. Suzi Boxer), and Eamon (Abigail DeCiccio, fiance) and grandfather to Sadie, Harry, and Ronan Sanford; Esm, Oisin, Oliver, and Agnes Asaad; Finnian, Isaac, Xavier, and Beatrix Murphy; and Onora and Ciaran Murphy. He is also survived by his brother and best friend, Russell Davis Murphy (Sheila), his niece Siobhan, and nephews Russell Murphy Jr. (Susannah), Brian (Silvia), and Stephen (Victoria).
Maurice attended St. Mary's School in Dedham, graduated from Boston College High School in 1954, and was ordained a priest in 1962 after attending St John's Seminary in Brighton, MA. After leaving the priesthood his work led him into the field of telecommunications and information technology and ultimately to executive positions at Polaroid Corporation, Harvard University, and Thomson Reuters Corporation.
Mo was by nature outgoing and sociable, but never superficial or studied in his dealings with others. Throughout his life and career he demonstrated that rare ability to engage others, to listen and to empathize with them, and, when the occasion warranted, to help guide them through difficult moments. He remembered the work he did as a priest as the most satisfying and meaningful work of his life.
He was an avid skier, fisherman, gardener, and golfer at Plymouth Country Club and Pinehurst Country Club, Pinehurst, NC. He was a former member of the Kingston Conservation Commission and Finance Committee and a long-time parishioner at St. Mary's Parish, North Plymouth, MA Holy Family Parish, Duxbury, MA and Our Lady of Americas, Biscoe , NC. Mo treasured his many friends, loved nature, dogs, telling a good joke, and mesmerizing children with magic tricks. Above all, he was a kind and compassionate man, a loyal friend, a loving spouse, a proud and loving father of five, and a grandfather (Papa Aye) of thirteen. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday Febuary 3rd at 10:00 am in Holy Family Church in Duxbury. Visiting hours in the Davis Funeral Home 373 Court St. North Plymouth on Thursday from 5-8 pm.
