On Saturday, October 8, 2022, Mary Ruth (Bourne) Slater passed away at the age of 95 in Plymouth Massachusetts.
She was born on June 12, 1927 in Birney, Montana to Francis M. and Emma (Davidson) Bourne.
Her occupation as a printer began during WW2 when the men went to war. She ran a printing press for the local paper in Forsyth Montana. She followed her parents to Kodiak, Alaska where she ran a press for the U.S. Navy. She met her husband, John E. Slater, also a printer at the Navy Printing Office. They had three children, all born in Kodiak.
The family later moved to Sharon, Massachusetts, where Mary Ruth worked for The Sharon Advocate and later Thermoprint in Walpole. She finished her printing career working for the Newport Daily News.
Mary Ruth loved the Red Sox. She would yell at the TV during the games and tried to watch them all. She was lucky to have gone to Fenway several times. She was an avid gardener. Her last request was a garden tomato. She enjoyed going to the flower shows, state fairs and mostly she loved the rodeos.
She is predeceased by her parents, her husband John, her son Steve, sister Betty Nile, brothers Jim, Joe and Lyn. She is survived by her son Rick and daughter Sherri. Grandchildren John, Demian, Susan, Ed, Jim, and ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Mary Ruth will be held on Monday, October 17, 2022 in the Cartmell-Davis Funeral Home, 619 State Road, Plymouth (Manomet) at 12:00PM. Visitation with the family will be from 11:00AM – 12:00PM. Interment will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA at 1:30PM.
