Obituaries
Marie Walker, 99, died peacefully in her sleep on December 26, 2022, attended by her family.
Marie was born on August 23, 1923, in Plymouth, MA, to William and Mamie Mahler and spent most of her childhood in Kingston. After graduating from high school, she attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston. One of the many young people commuting by train to schools in Boston from Kingston was Chuck Walker, and by the time Chuck enlisted in the Army in 1943, they were a couple. Marie worked as a secretary in Boston while Chuck served in the Army Air Corps. They married when Chuck returned from Europe in 1946 and soon bought a house in Duxbury and started a family.
Once her three daughters were in school, Marie worked half time as the office manager for Walker Brothers Realtors and later also for the Burns insurance agency in Plymouth.
Marie supported many local organizations. She was active in the Duxbury Council on Aging group that spearheaded the effort to create the Duxbury Senior Center, and she served as a volunteer at the Senior Center for many years. She was treasurer of the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society and served the American Legion Auxiliary in a similar capacity. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in North Plymouth for all her 99 years and served the church in many different capacities.
Marie was also a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader and bravely escorted 10-year-old scouts on week-long camping trips to the Cape. She spent her free time at Duxbury beach, reading, and canning (later freezing) vegetables from her husband’s garden. When she and Chuck retired, they never considered leaving Duxbury and moved to the Village at Duxbury in 1989.
She was predeceased by Clarence Walker, her husband of 72 years. She is survived by her sister Kay Galambos of Parkville, MD and by her three daughters, Linda Seale of Duxbury, Judith Walker (Allan Tumolillo) of Maplewood, NJ, and Sharon Solstice (Carol Martin) of Walnut Creek, CA. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Matthew and Brian Tumolillo and Clare Solstice and by several nieces.
Visiting hours will be at the Cartmell-Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home at 373 Court Street, Plymouth, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 3. The funeral service will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church, 384 Court Street, Plymouth on Wednesday, January 4 at 11:00, followed by a reception at the church.
