Obituaries
Louis A. “Buddy” Silvia, Jr. of Plymouth passed unexpectedly on August 16th at BID Plymouth. Born in Plymouth on June 30, 1954, he is the son of the late Louis A. Silvia, Sr. and Olive A. (Smith) Silvia. A life long resident of Plymouth, Buddy was educated in the Plymouth schools and enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1973. He was stationed onboard the USCGC Balsam, Adak, Alaska and was honorably discharged in 1977. Known for his woodworking skills, Buddy was employed at Plimoth Plantation and served as the Mayflower’s Assistant Shipwright. Also known as a supportive advocate for the Indigenous People’s culture and history, Buddy started the daily natural fires at the Indigenous Homesite at Plimoth Plantation.
Since the early 1990’s, Buddy worked at the Plymouth Yacht Club as the House and Grounds Steward. He was attentive to detail and gave a personal touch to everything he did. A familiar face around Plymouth, Buddy was known as a kind and gentle soul who loved the outdoors and searching for local artifacts. He spent many evenings with friends at Plymouth Beach surf fishing or running his remote controlled truck along the rocks on the breakwater. Buddy enjoyed living near Hayden Pond where he would catch and release fish. Friends note time spent with Buddy was like being alongside a childhood pal who enjoyed playing guitar by a campfire while listening to the “banjo” frogs in the distance. He carved interesting creations out of a “good looking piece of wood.”
Buddy loved all forms of music. He played the bass guitar in several local bands including Live Bait, Situation, Dennis James Band and H.C. Party Goers who he recorded a 45 that was played on WBCN and COZ. A special friendship developed when “Barn Cat” aka BC wandered into his life.
Buddy was loved by many and is survived by his son, Jacob Anthony Gordon-Silvia of Newfoundland, Canada. He is also survived by his sisters Lois Storsveen of Plymouth and Charlene Royer of East Bridgewater. He is the brother of the late Nora Schober and Frank Thomas. Buddy is survived by several nieces and nephews including Robin and Tommy Gallo.
A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held on Friday, September 9th from 2-6 P.M. at the Plymouth Yacht Club, 34 Union Street, Plymouth. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Wildlands Trust, Inc. 675 Long Pond Road, Plymouth, MA 02360
