John J. Walsh Jr., age 72 years, of Manomet, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at home surrounded by his family. He was married for 51 years to Claire (McNamara) Walsh, and was the son of the late John J., Sr. and Geraldine (Hawkes) Walsh. Born in Boston on May 19, 1950, he was a graduate of Roslindale High School, class of 1968. A United States Air Force veteran during Vietnam wartime, John worked as a firefighter for the town of Plymouth and was a home builder. Both careers were cut short after he was injured at a fire. He later owned and operated a home inspection company, Plymouth County Homes and Plymouth realtors came to loathe him due to his thoroughness! A lifelong communicant of St. Bonaventure’s Church in Manomet, John also found happiness at the beaches in Manomet and Venice, Florida. He loved to dance, ski, play golf and bocci. He was a pizza officianato and was constantly working on perfecting the perfect pie. He was a talented finish carpenter. He enjoyed being in his workshop tinkering and later building wall clocks. He was a devoted member of the American Legion, Post #40. He adored his family, especially his grandchildren.
Aside from his wife Claire, John will be forever missed by his children, Jennifer Darling and her husband Paul of Manomet, John J. Walsh, III and his wife Jennifer of Cedarville, and Peter Walsh and his wife Lauren of Plymouth, his grandchildren, Madeleine and her husband Nick of Manomet, Claire, Jane, Peter Jr., Audrey, Andrew and John J. Walsh, IV. He was the brother of Annette McGourty and her husband Joe of Manomet, pre-deceased by William Walsh, Gale Barton of Plymouth, Michael Walsh of Leander, TX and Larry Walsh and his wife Maria of Rochester, NH. He was the Godfather of Amy Chapman, Ryan Walsh and Casey Sheehan.
A funeral Mass will be held in St. Bonaventure’s Church, 803 State Rd., Plymouth (Manomet) on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at 10:30AM, followed by interment in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 12:45PM. Visitation with the Walsh family will be on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, from 4:00PM – 8:00PM in the Cartmell-Davis Funeral Home, 619 State Road, Plymouth (Manomet). In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the “Fight for Dale” c/o Kate Dory, 71 Standish Ave., Plymouth, MA 02360 in support of Dale’s fight with Lou Gherig’s Disease (ALS). Dale is a Plymouth Firefighter who recently retired due to his diagnosis.
