Obituaries
Ida L. MacKay, age 98, of Plymouth, passed away on Saturday, August 20th, at the Newfield House in Plymouth. She was the devoted wife of the late Franklin E. MacKay. Loving mother of Robert MacKay of Quincy, and Mary Wells and her husband Robert of Whitman. Grandmother of Heather Finneran and her husband Peter of Marshfield, and Laura Lee and her husband Joseph, Jr. of Weymouth. Ida was also survived by her great grandchildren Peter Finneran, Cara Finneran, Matilda Finneran, Juliana Lee, and Tessa Lee. As well as her beloved sister-in-law Betty Lou MacKay of Englewood FL, dearest friend Elizabeth Campbell of Waltham, and many nieces and nephews.
Ida was born in Newport NY on September 11, 1923. Daughter of the late Arthur and Ida (Schreiner) Rathbun. She was raised in Newport and graduated from West Canada Valley High School. Following the outbreak of WWII, Ida and all of her siblings enlisted in the military. The United States Army brought Ida to Italy where she met her husband, who was also serving in the Army. After the war Ida and Franklin moved to Boston where they raised their family and both built their careers. Franklin made his career with the Boston Fire Department, and Ida as an executive assistant with the US Department of Transportation. She was a true career woman who transformed from a country mouse to the city. Ida had a true love of life and her spirit drew people to her. She always had music playing, especially country, and enjoyed playing the mandolin in her youth. She was a proud member of the American Legion in Newport, and formerly of the Old Dorchester Post. She enjoyed sewing and doing crossword puzzles, even completing the most challenging ones in the New York Times.
A visitation will be held at the Cartmell-Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home, 150 Court St., Plymouth, on Wednesday, August 24th, from 4:00 pm till 7:00 pm. Folks are welcome to the funeral home the next day at 8:00 am, followed by burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 10:00 am. Donations in Ida’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
