Howard N. Phelps Jr. of Plymouth, formerly of Rhode Island, died peacefully on July 12 at Laurelwood in Pinehills after a lengthy illness. He is the beloved husband of 51 years to Vicki G. (Lancaster) Phelps. Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, on June 30, 1940, son of the late Howard N. and Minnie (Specht) Phelps Sr., he was educated in Rhode Island and graduated from Cranston East High School in the class of 1958. He attended University of Rhode Island and graduated in the class of 1963 with his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Howard was a 42 year employee of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport. He also worked for the Secretary of the Navy at the Pentagon. Howard was a longtime church organist, having played the organ since the age of 15. He played throughout Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts and was a member of the American Guild of Organist. Howard kept himself busy at all times, whether traveling throughout Europe with his wife or doing volunteer work. He helped the elderly do taxes with the AARP, worked as a child advocate for the courts in Rhode Island, and was a docent at the Roger Williams Park Zoo. He was an animal lover and enjoyed playing cribbage with his friends at the Great Island community at Pinehills in Plymouth.
Besides his loving wife Vicki, he is survived by his son, Matthew Phelps, daughter-in-law, Sarah Craft, and grandson, Mason Phelps, of Seattle, Washington. He is also survived by his brother- and sister-in-law, Gary and Lisa Lancaster.
Visiting hours will be at the Cartmell-Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home, 619 State Rd in Plymouth (Manomet) on Saturday, July 16 from 2-4 pm.
