Obituaries
On Thursday, January 26th, Gloria Enis (Marinelli) Leighton, beloved wife of Gordon, mother to Gordy Jr., Kim, Judy, Nanci, and Darrin, aunt to many and Nonni to David, William and Alex, passed away at the age of 82. A lifetime resident of Kingston, she lived a rich, full life devoted to her family, dedicated to serving the community, and deeply ensconced to her faith as a congregant at St. Mary’s Church.
Gloria was born on August 15, 1940, daughter of the late Rosa (Coridini) and Guiseppe Marinelli, and sister to the late Annie Maguire and Josephine Minelli. Educated in the Kingston school system, she worked in high school to hone secretarial schools for her life after graduation. Her first job was as one of the PELCO girls at the Electric Light Company in Plymouth. After marrying and raising her young children for a few years, Gloria worked part time, and eventually full-time, at the Plymouth County District Courthouse in the District Attorney’s Office, working on grand jury indictments for Superior Court. Her 37 years there earned her a well-deserved retirement, and freed lots of time for exciting travel with family and close friends.
Gloria met the love of her life, Gordon Leighton of Middleboro, at the old Marshfield Skateland. They enjoyed over 61 years of marriage--camping and traveling with their children for many years. Some of their favorite memories include long road trips packing their kids (and nieces and nephews) into the Wagoneer and Skamper Camper, when the kids were younger. As the family grew to include grandsons, they had many memorable vacations at Myrtle Beach, a couple cruises, and an exciting trip to Hawaii. Gloria was committed to supporting her grandsons in their many sporting, scouting, and outdoor activities, logging countless hours watching football, soccer, and wrestling matches. Most recently she was an avid listener to her grandson’s college radio show. Right up until her death, Gloria loved to play cards, gamble in various football pools, and play BINGO every Sunday with family on Zoom.
After her family, Gloria’s Catholic faith was closest to her heart. For 35 years, she worked faithfully with a close-knit group of St. Mary’s congregants to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Emerald Club. Their endeavors helped the church with renovating their roof and other projects.
Gloria is survived by her husband Gordon, son Gordy, Jr., daughter and son-in-law Kim and Bill Shanahan, daughter Judy and partner, James Bennett, daughter and son-in-law Nanci and Tom Fuller, and grandsons David Pettingell, William Shanahan, and Alex Fuller. She is preceded in death by her son Darrin.
Relatives and friends are invited to join them on Sunday, January 29 from 1 pm to 5 pm for viewing at Cartmell-Davis Funeral Home in North Plymouth. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary’s Parish on Monday, January 30 at 10 am, 313 Court St, North Plymouth. Burial will follow at Kingston Evergreen Cemetery at 21 Green St, Kingston.
