PERRY, Edward A. passed away in Plymouth on March 17, 2011 at the age of 89. Formerly of Yarmouthport and Quincy, he was the husband of the late Elinor (Gauthier). Ed and Elinor met in high school and were married for sixty two years. He is the beloved father of Patricia Scarlata and her husband Paul of Plymouth, Edward A. Perry, Jr. and his wife Maureen of Camino, CA. Ed is the grandfather of Christina Scarlata of Brooklyn, NY, Michael Scarlata of Seattle, WA, Andrew Scarlata of Manhattan and Alison Perry of Camino, CA. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Ed was a graduate of No. Quincy HS and attended Northeastern University. He worked in engineering/maintenance at Cape Cod Hospital and retired in 1986. Ed was a decorated WWII US Navy veteran who served with distinction in both the European and Asiatic-Pacific theaters. He was among the many young men that enlisted immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor and went on to be awarded eight battle stars. Ed narrowly survived a shipwreck in February 1942 while aboard the USS Truxton in a convoy that was shipwrecked and sunk off the coast of Newfoundland. He was courageously rescued by the inhabitants of a small mining town rappelling off cliffs and plucking the frozen oil-covered and unconscious sailors from the sea. The tragic event was memorialized and Ed was noted in the book, Standing Into Danger. After his recovery, he served on the USS Brooklyn in the invasion of North Africa. From 1943 to 1945 he was on the USS Wichita, which participated in the Philippine Liberation and many of the epic battles in the Asiatic-Pacific. Ed lived a full and happy life. The funeral will be on March 23, 2011 from the Richard Davis Funeral Home, 619 State Road, Plymouth (Manomet) with a remembrance beginning at 9:30 AM.
