Obituaries
Charles A. Gates, age 80, of Plymouth, died Friday, September 16, 2022 at home surrounded by his
family. He was the husband of Carol L. (Hudson) Gates, and the son of the late Charles F. and Ann
(Costantino) Gates. Born in Boston on October 31, 1941, Charles attended RISD, Berkley College of Music
and The Institute of Art in Boston, where he studied art, music and languages. He worked as a Graphic
Designer at Stone and Webster Engineering and an Art Director at Hub Folding Box . Charles had a black
belt in karate and for a period of time had his own school in Malden. He taught piano and guitar at
Mack’s Music and Crossroads Music. As a child, he was on the dive team at the YMCA and he enjoyed
fishing and swimming. He was a talented artist in watercolor and oil paintings.
Charles served in the United States Marine Corps during Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam.
Besides his loving wife Carol, he is survived by his three children, Kellie Brandt and her husband Timothy
of Arlington, Michael Gates of Whitman, and Tina Raczka and her wife Stephanie of Dartmouth, his nine
grandchildren, Abigail, Maxwell, Olivia, Jacob, Mason, Jaxon, Matthew, Owen and Caitlin. He also leaves
his brother Franklin Gates and his wife Sandra of North Carolina, his sister Sandra Nolfo and her husband
Charlie of Fairfield, CT and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 from 5 - 7 pm at Cartmell - Davis
Funeral Home, 619 State Rd. Plymouth (Manomet). Burial will be held at Bourne National Cemetery
Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at 10am.
