It is with great sadness that the family of Carl Jayko, 70, announces his peaceful passing on August 29, 2022 at his home in Carver, MA, surrounded by his family. Carl was a loving husband to his wife Elin (Sand) and his late wife Jean (Dunlap). He leaves behind his daughter, Emily Jayko Salvucci, her husband Richard, and daughter Cara of Plymouth, MA; his son, Timothy Jayko, his wife Nicole, and daughter Daphne of Ballston Lake, NY; and his stepson, Daniel O’Rourke of Lynnfield, MA. He also leaves behind his sister, Mary Newton and her husband Raymond of Sugar Hill, GA; his stepmother, Pearl Jayko of Billerica, MA; and many other beloved family members. Carl is predeceased by his father, Joseph Jayko; mother, Elizabeth (Wilcox) Jayko; father-in-law, Roger Dunlap; and mother-in-law, Marie (Boutin) Dunlap.
A lifetime learner, Carl graduated from Plymouth-Carver High School in 1970, where he built his own oscilloscope for science class. He went on to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University and earn his Professional Engineer certification. During his long and vibrant career, Carl worked as an Electric Power Engineer at COM/Electric and Consulting Engineers Group. Carl was widely regarded as an industry expert in electric power transmission planning and stability studies, which led him to start his own business, Jayko Engineering and Consulting. In addition to technology, Carl was passionate about local history, volunteering at the Plymouth Public Library History Room and contributing a chapter to the book Beyond Plymouth Rock, a collaborative work detailing Plymouth’s rich history.
Despite his great accomplishments in the workplace and in the community, Carl’s greatest source of pride was his family. He first met his wife, Jean Dunlap, in the fifth grade, and the pair eventually graduated high school together before marrying in 1974. Carl showed tremendous strength and resilience after the untimely passing of Jean in 2003, eventually marrying Elin Sand in 2009, and becoming stepfather to her son, Daniel. Together, Carl and Elin enjoyed traveling, spending time on the Cape, and discovering new restaurants.
With his kids by his side, Carl enjoyed tinkering with electronics and woodworking, crafting many pieces that his loved ones still cherish today. His favorite pastime was working with his children on their science projects, from pinewood derby cars to fiber-optic cables, teaching them engineering principles and the importance of perseverance. Carl will be forever remembered as a diligent and dedicated man whose strong values set an example for his family, friends, and colleagues.
There will be a visiting hour from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6, at Davis Funeral Home, 373 Court Street, Plymouth, MA, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. and a reception. Burial will be held privately for family at Chiltonville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Plymouth Public Library Foundation in support of the Plymouth History Room, 132 South Street, Plymouth, MA 02360.
